Zachary Callaghan and Tracy Oelschlaeger, OHREC crew and K-State Ag Education majors, represented the Horticulture Department at American Royal CALF (Children’s Agricultural Learning Fest) days on June 8-9, 2017. Over 350 kids, ages 6-11, attended this hands-on discovery event that featured barnyard animals, crops, ornamental plants. This event shows how agriculture is part of their everyday lives and opens children up to experiences most don’t normally see.
The OHREC crew taught the kids how to and what is needed to grow a healthy plant. In addition, they did a quick overview about grafted plants and the benefits of this “Frankenstein” method. After their discussion, the kids were able to take a Marigold home with them.
It was a good time and we look forward to participating next year!
