The vegetable team at OHREC plays a big role in the annual Great Plains Growers Conference, which occurs annually in January. The 2018 conference is January 11-13, at the Fulkerson Conference Center on the Missouri Western State University campus in St. Joseph, MO. Cary Rivard and I serve on the organizing committee, which is responsible for developing program tracks and workshops in addition to other logistical issues related to the conference. Eighteen program tracks are scheduled during the January 2018 three-day conference.
A pre-conference workshop, Scaling Down Postharvest Technology to Reduce Food Losses, organized by Cary, myself and Eleni Pliakoni from the K-State Olathe campus is on Thursday, January 11th. It will feature local growers, researchers and students from K-State and collaborators from the University of Florida. This workshop is part of an AFRI Food Security grant.
Additionally, students and staff from OHREC will present oral and poster presentations including:
The conference and trade show is a collaborative effort by University of Missouri Extension, Iowa State University Extension, Kansas State Research and Extension, Lincoln University, and the University of Nebraska Extension. Last year the conference drew more than 500 producers and exhibitors from at least five states (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota).
